
With her soaring talent and fine sensibility, Jonisha Poudel has established herself as one of Nepal’s very best exponents of khayal, the preeminent form of the Eastern classical musical tradition. She began her training in Nepal with Guru Shree K.C., and for a short period also studied with Pt. Vishnu Acharya and Padmashree Dr. Pt. Rajeshwor Acharya. She is currently a PhD scholar at Kolkata’s Rabindra Bharati University under a fellowship from the Indian Council for Cultural Relations, and training in khayal and thumri under Maestro Debapriya Adhikary, a disciple of Padma Vibhushan Girija Devi (Banaras Gharana), Pt. Samresh Chowdhury (Seniya Gharana), and Pt. Uday Bhawalkar (Dagar Gharana). She has performed widely, including a solo concert at the National Cultural Academy in 2017, and been honoured with the Yuva Pratibha Samman (2019). Alongside her classical career, she has also sung for Nepali films.
